Lecture for Friday 01/28/2011

Class opening 9:00 AM
During attendance sign in, Matthew Carson pointed out an interesting article to kick off the discussion about Wal-Mart. The source was The East Texas KTRE 9 News article titled, "Lufkin moms react to Walmart makeup for tweens" by Morgan Thomas.

A short discussion and chuckle was shared by most of the class.

Discussing MLA Formatting 9:05 AM
Professor Cameron walked carefully through expectations on how to format and submit MLA papers.

Announcements  9:18 AM
Professor Cameron covered a few statistics concerning those who had taken the syllabus quiz. In addition, statistics concerning those who had taken the first quiz was also discussed and students were encouraged to take the quiz for the syllabus because it would be free points.

Don't forget:

  • The class will have until Sunday night at midnight to submit assignments that have been due during the first two weeks (or up until this point).
  • We will be tightening up assignment deadlines and providing no more slack. If an assignment is due we have been given enough time to warm up to the pace of the class, etc.
  • Each case summary is worth 11 points but you may earn 2 additional points with the assignment so it can equal 13 points.
Definitions  9:23 AM
Definitions of stakeholders, ethics and business ethics were talked about. In addition, affluence and education were covered.

Class Discussion 9:33 AM

Topic 1:
Class discussion began about case study, "Wal-Mart: The Main Street Merchant of Doom". Refer to page 771 in your textbook.


Topic 1 Questions:
The following is a summary of questions that Professor Cameron asked in class so you can better understand the direction the discussion went:

"What is this case about?"
"How many camera's are in Wal-Mart?"
"Does anybody remember the case when a girl was kidnapped from a Wal-Mart?"
"Wal-Mart gave 1 million to the Salvation Army for disaster relief; is that a lot of money to Wal-Mart?"

In closing:
Check out "Wal-Martwatch" it is a website. These first 2 weeks has been an orientation. Now we should know the expectations of the class. Formation of study groups was suggested.
